Howe Park Shooting Sends 4 Shot in Sacramento County's Arden-Arcade Neighborhood
Sacramento County Sheriff's Office investigators are working a gun violence incident that erupted late Saturday at Howe Park while officers were clearing an unsanctioned gathering of an estimated several hundred individuals.
How It Started
Law enforcement initially got calls about the park at about 6:30 in the evening after being notified of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Soon after, a second call came in regarding a reported physical confrontation taking place within the park grounds.
A sheriff's airship scanned the area from the air but found nothing to substantiate the fight report. Regardless, it was apparent that several hundred individuals had come together at the location without official sanction.
The Shooting Itself
Officers set about removing more info people from the park by forming a perimeter and broadcasting over loudspeakers directing the assembled crowd to vacate the area. Around 15 minutes were given for the gathering to break up.
As the crowd was being cleared that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition were fired. Gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Officers wasted no time in searching for victims.
Four People Shot
Altogether, four victims were found to have been shot. The four individuals — consisting of one woman and three men each apparently in their 20s — were transported to area medical facilities. Hospital staff noted that two victims were in serious condition, one sustained moderate wounds, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. According to authorities, all four were expected to survive.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department also responded and provided medical assistance the injured on location.
Physical Evidence
The center of the incident appears to have unfolded near the Cottage Way side of the park next to the Home Depot store located at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. CSI personnel found additional shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Ballistic damage were also found in the metal fencing bordering the nearby Home Depot. The physical evidence pointed to that a shooter had been sending rounds south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot store. The store itself was locked down while the scene was active. Crime scene personnel remained on scene well into the night.
Arrests Made
Reports confirmed through law enforcement radio communications indicated that a vehicle identified as a Kia was contacted by law enforcement in nearby Solano County. Four detainees were held for questioning. Sheriff's units were dispatched to Solano County to transport the detainees for processing in Sacramento County. Video evidence made clear that two shooters had been involved.
